ABUJA — Nigeria’s opposition political groups have stepped up efforts to build a common political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A meeting involving opposition figures has reportedly begun work on a framework for a possible single presidential candidate, with working groups expected to develop proposals within four weeks.
The discussions include a controversial proposal for a four-year transitional programme and single presidential term.
However, the opposition movement is already facing internal disagreements. Some political figures, including prominent opposition politicians, were absent from the latest meeting, while a faction of the African Democratic Congress rejected claims that the party had joined an alliance.
The development could become one of the major political stories as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections.
For the opposition, the major challenge will be turning different political interests into one workable structure.
For the ruling party, a united opposition could create a much stronger challenge in 2027.
