The Federal Government has reopened the First Niger Bridge linking Onitsha in Anambra State with Asaba in Delta State following about 38 days of closure for emergency rehabilitation.
Minister of Works David Umahi announced the reopening on Thursday, October 15, after repair work was completed.
The bridge was closed on September 7 after concerns were raised about its structural condition, including damaged or missing components. The closure was initially expected to end on September 21 but was extended because of delays, including persistent rainfall.
The rehabilitation included structural repairs, resurfacing and the installation of solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras. Additional measures were also introduced to improve traffic safety and monitoring.
The bridge is an important transport link between Nigeria’s South-East and South-South regions. It supports the movement of people, agricultural produce, manufactured goods and other commercial supplies.
Its reopening is expected to ease travel and help businesses that were affected by the closure.
The Works Minister also stressed the importance of protecting the bridge from activities that could weaken its structure.
Monafrika’s Take
The reopening is good news for commuters and businesses. However, major infrastructure should not be allowed to deteriorate before urgent repairs become necessary. Regular inspections, timely maintenance and stronger protection of public assets will help reduce disruption and save public money.
