Families Await Answers as Investigation Continues into Fatal Nigerian Air Force Crash

Families of the 25 people killed in a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash on October 5 say they are still waiting for answers about the cause of the accident and the progress of recovery efforts.

The aircraft crashed in a remote swampy area near Igbokoda in Ondo State while travelling from Benin City to Lagos. Those on board included 19 military personnel and six civilians.

President Bola Tinubu has ordered an investigation into the incident. However, relatives who spoke to Reuters on Friday expressed frustration over what they described as poor communication from the authorities.

Some families said they had received little information about the recovery of remains and the identification process. Others raised concerns about the support provided to relatives of the victims.

The Nigerian Air Force has said it is supporting affected families and intensifying search and recovery operations. The cause of the crash has not been officially established in the reports available.

The incident has renewed questions about military aviation safety, communication with victims’ families and the need for transparent investigations into fatal aircraft accidents.

For the families, obtaining reliable information about what happened remains a major concern.

Monafrika’s Take

Families affected by this tragedy deserve timely information, compassion and proper support. The investigation should establish the cause of the crash and identify any lessons that could prevent future accidents. Transparency and accountability are essential when lives are lost in incidents involving public institutions.
