Rufai Oseni and Abike Dabiri-Erewa Clash Over Alleged Ethnic Insult

A public disagreement between ARISE News presenter Rufai Oseni and Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has attracted attention following a controversy over an alleged offensive social media post about the Igbo ethnic group.

The disagreement resurfaced during a media event in Lagos on Saturday, October 10, where Dabiri-Erewa criticised what she described as irresponsible journalism.

She argued that Oseni had misrepresented her reaction to a social media post as an endorsement of an offensive description of Igbo people.

Dabiri-Erewa maintained that her response had been misunderstood and disputed the interpretation placed on it.

Oseni, however, challenged her explanation and maintained that reacting positively to a post targeting an ethnic group could be interpreted as supporting its message.

He subsequently called for a public debate to address the disagreement.

The exchange has generated discussion online about journalistic responsibility, public accountability and the need for care when commenting on sensitive ethnic issues.

The controversy also highlights how social media reactions can become the subject of wider public disputes, particularly when they involve prominent public figures.

Monafrika’s Take

The disagreement between Oseni and Dabiri-Erewa raises important questions about responsible journalism and public communication.

Journalists have a duty to verify information and provide context before drawing conclusions. Public officials and other influential figures also have a responsibility to communicate carefully, especially when an issue involves ethnic identity.

In a diverse country like Nigeria, public debate should encourage accountability without deepening divisions between communities.

The most useful outcome would be a clear explanation of the disputed exchange, supported by the original posts and full context, rather than further personal attacks.
