Nigerian media entrepreneur Mo Abudu has opened EbonyLife Place London, a new cultural and entertainment centre designed to showcase African and Black creativity to international audiences.
The facility was officially opened on Thursday, October 8, 2026, in South London. London Mayor Sadiq Khan and other dignitaries attended the opening ceremony. The centre opened its doors to the public over the weekend.
The new centre brings together cinema, food, fashion, music and art in one location. It aims to create more opportunities for African filmmakers, artists, designers and other creative professionals to present their work to audiences in the United Kingdom and beyond.
A dedicated home for African cinema
One of the main attractions is the 160-seat Amani Auditorium, a cinema dedicated to African and Black films.
The cinema will showcase Nollywood productions alongside films from other African countries and the wider Black diaspora, including stories from the Caribbean, the United States and the United Kingdom.
The venue is also expected to host film premieres, industry discussions, masterclasses, live performances and other cultural events.
Beyond the cinema, EbonyLife Place London features a Nigerian restaurant, a bar, a lounge, a boutique showcasing African and diaspora fashion, and an art gallery displaying contemporary African art.
The idea is to give visitors more than a place to watch films. It is designed as a meeting point where people can experience different parts of African culture through entertainment, dining, fashion and creative exhibitions.
Mo Abudu takes the EbonyLife brand beyond Nigeria
The London launch expands the EbonyLife Place concept that began in Lagos in 2019.
Through EbonyLife Group, Abudu has built a media business focused on telling African stories through film and television. The London centre extends that work by creating a physical space where African stories and creative talent can reach a wider international audience.
Abudu has said the project is rooted in African identity but welcomes people from all backgrounds. Her vision is to help more people discover African filmmakers, artists, musicians and designers.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan welcomed the development, describing it as an addition to the city’s cultural offering. He also linked the project to the creative relationship between London and Lagos.
What the opening means for Nollywood and African businesses
The launch comes at a time when African film and entertainment businesses are seeking wider international audiences.
A dedicated cinema and cultural centre could give Nigerian and other African filmmakers another place to screen their productions, meet industry professionals and build relationships with distributors and potential business partners.
It could also create opportunities for African fashion brands, artists, food businesses and event organisers to reach customers outside the continent.
However, the project’s long-term impact will depend on audience interest, the quality of its programmes and its ability to create lasting commercial opportunities for African creatives.
Monafrika’s Take
EbonyLife Place London is more than a new entertainment venue. It represents an effort to give African stories a permanent home in one of the world’s major cultural cities.
For Nollywood, the opportunity goes beyond screening films. It could help filmmakers build stronger international networks, introduce new audiences to African productions, and create more business opportunities for the wider creative industry.
African businesses can also learn from this approach. Instead of relying only on international platforms to promote African products and stories, entrepreneurs can build spaces and platforms that bring their work directly to global audiences.
The next important question is whether EbonyLife Place London can turn this opening into lasting success for African filmmakers, artists and businesses.
For Africa’s creative industry, the challenge is no longer just telling its stories. It is building the platforms that help the world see, experience and invest in them.
