Nigeria: FG Shuts Owerri Airport for 25 Days Over Runway Repairs

The Federal Government has announced a temporary closure of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for 25 days to allow runway rehabilitation and extension.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo announced that the closure will begin on October 20, 2026. The project is expected to prepare the airport for increased passenger traffic during the Christmas travel season.

The closure may affect passengers travelling to and from Imo State and neighbouring parts of the South-East. Travellers should confirm their flight arrangements with their airlines before departure.

The Federal Government has said the work is necessary to improve aviation safety and airport capacity.

Monafrika’s take

The timing of the project makes early communication important. Airlines, travel agents and passengers need clear information about alternative airports and flight arrangements to avoid unnecessary disruption.
