20 Rescued NYSC Candidates Reunite with Families After Abduction in Imo

Twenty prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who were abducted in Imo State, have reunited with their families in Ibadan, Oyo State, after spending seven days in captivity.

The graduates were rescued in Owerri on Wednesday, October 7, and reunited with their parents on Thursday, October 8, following security debriefings by officials of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The victims were among 30 prospective corps members travelling from Oyo State to their respective orientation camps in Abia State when gunmen abducted them along the Owerri–Onitsha Road at Umunoha, Imo State. The remaining 10 reportedly escaped during the incident.

The reunion was marked by emotional scenes as parents embraced their children after days of uncertainty and fear. Some parents wept with relief, grateful that their children had returned safely.

One of the parents, Faith Felicia Abiala, said the experience had been deeply distressing for her family. She called on the Federal Government to strengthen security along routes used by prospective corps members travelling to their places of deployment.

She also suggested that the government consider air transportation arrangements for corps members where long-distance road journeys pose serious security risks.

Meanwhile, the circumstances surrounding the victims’ release have raised questions about whether a ransom was paid. Some parents claimed that money was paid to secure their children’s freedom. However, Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, said the kidnappers yielded to pressure from security operatives and that he was unaware of any ransom payment.

Monafrika’s Take

The safe return of the 20 prospective corps members is a relief for their families and a reminder of the security risks facing young Nigerians travelling for national service.

The government must strengthen security on major highways and improve coordination between security agencies and the NYSC. Prospective corps members should also receive timely travel information and clear guidance on safe routes.

National service should be an opportunity for young graduates to contribute to the country’s development, not a journey that leaves families fearing for their children’s safety.
