Ebola Outbreak: Children Among Worst Hit as Death Toll Rises

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is taking a serious toll on children, with nearly 1,000 children reportedly among those who have died from the disease.

Save the Children said at least 2,071 children under the age of 18 had contracted Ebola since May 15, with 961 deaths recorded among them. The organisation is calling for more support focused specifically on children affected by the outbreak.

The wider outbreak has now recorded more than 8,000 confirmed cases, according to figures reported by the organisation and Congolese authorities.

The situation has also left many children without parents or primary caregivers. Save the Children said at least 180 children have lost both parents or their main caregivers during the outbreak.

The latest figures underline the continuing pressure on Congo’s health system as authorities and international partners work to contain the virus.

Monafrika Focus:
The growing impact on children adds another serious dimension to Congo’s health crisis, particularly for families already facing displacement and limited access to healthcare.
