NAIROBI — Lecturers and other workers at Kenya’s public universities have begun a nationwide strike after negotiations over a new 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement failed.
The unions say the outstanding issues include salaries, allowances, medical benefits and the recruitment of more academic staff.
The industrial action could disrupt teaching and examinations at public universities across the country.
The unions rejected the latest counter-offer from the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum, saying it did not adequately address their demands.
Monafrika Focus:
The dispute puts Kenya’s higher-education system under pressure at a time when universities are already dealing with staffing and funding challenges.
