Eritrea Cuts Diplomatic Ties With Ethiopia as Regional Tensions Rise

ASMARA — Eritrea has formally severed diplomatic relations with neighbouring Ethiopia, deepening one of Africa’s most serious emerging diplomatic crises.

The decision followed Ethiopia’s closure of its embassy in Eritrea and the expulsion of 10 Eritrean diplomats.

Addis Ababa accused Eritrea of hostile activities and alleged involvement in the renewed conflict in Tigray.

Eritrea rejected the accusations and announced the diplomatic break on Thursday.

The two countries fought a major border war between 1998 and 2000. Eritrea later supported Ethiopian federal forces during the previous Tigray war.

Their relationship has now sharply deteriorated as fighting returns to northern Ethiopia.
