Africa’s $16bn Refinery Push Takes Shape in Kenya

LAMU — A $16 billion oil refinery project has been launched in Kenya as African countries seek to increase their capacity to process crude oil locally.

The planned refinery in Lamu is expected to process up to 700,000 barrels of oil per day once completed. Construction is expected to take about 40 months.

The project is being developed by Dangote Group and is expected to source crude from countries in the region.

However, the project has also faced concerns over land ownership, compensation and possible environmental effects.

Monafrika Focus:
The project reflects a wider push for Africa to process more of its own natural resources instead of exporting raw materials and importing finished products.
