ABUJA — October 1, 2026
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will resign from office if President Bola Tinubu fails to win the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike made the statement on Wednesday during a meeting with members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja. He said the presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027, and that he would announce his resignation the following day if Tinubu loses both territories.
The former Rivers State governor said the FCT is the territory where he currently works, while Rivers is his home state. He argued that he should accept responsibility if he is unable to deliver electoral support for Tinubu in either area.
“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Wike said.
Wike also disclosed that a multi-party “Rainbow Coalition” is being built in the FCT to mobilise support for Tinubu and other candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
He further challenged other political appointees to accept responsibility for electoral results in their respective areas.
The declaration comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties and political groups working to build alliances across the country.

Wike’s statement puts his own ministerial position directly against the outcome of the 2027 presidential vote in two areas with which he has strong political connections. Whether he follows through on the resignation pledge will depend on the eventual election results and his stated conditions.
