ADDIS ABABA — Residents in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, reported hearing explosions overnight as fighting between government forces and opposition groups intensified in the north of the country.
Three diplomatic sources confirmed hearing blasts in different parts of the capital. An opposition source claimed drone strikes had targeted military facilities, including the military headquarters, but the claim has not been independently verified.
The reports came only hours after Ethiopia’s intelligence service banned drone flights over Addis Ababa and surrounding areas.
Fighting has also continued in Tigray and Afar, with pro-government forces claiming further territorial gains. Tens of thousands of people have reportedly been displaced by the renewed fighting.
Monafrika Take:
The latest escalation is raising fresh concerns about the stability of Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa. The situation remains fluid, and claims from the opposing sides require independent verification.
