Enugu Drug Crackdown: NDLEA Arrests Two Suspected Kingpins, Uncovers Secret Lab

ENUGU — September 25, 2026: The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has dismantled a suspected Nigerian-Mexican drug network and uncovered a clandestine laboratory in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The agency said two men, 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, also known as Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, known as George, were arrested following months of intelligence gathering and surveillance.

NDLEA alleged that the two suspects were working with Rodriguez Villanueva, whom the agency identified as a suspected member of a Mexican drug cartel based in Mexico City. Villanueva and two other people named in the case remain at large, according to the agency.

Suspects Arraigned in Court

The two arrested men have been arraigned before the Federal High Court in Enugu on a five-count charge involving alleged conspiracy, management and financing of a drug-trafficking organisation, as well as alleged possession of controlled chemicals.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The court has fixed October 21, 2026, for the commencement of trial following an application by the NDLEA for an accelerated hearing.

Laboratory Discovered

The NDLEA said its Special Operations Unit traced the operation after surveillance conducted in December 2025 across Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states.

Investigators subsequently located a compound in Obeagu where they discovered what the agency described as a clandestine laboratory allegedly set up for large-scale production of methamphetamine.

The agency said equipment and controlled substances were recovered from the location. A separate search of one suspect’s family residence also produced additional equipment and substances, according to NDLEA.

NDLEA Vows to Pursue Those at Large

NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.) said the agency would continue efforts to locate the suspects who remain at large.

He also commended the officers involved in the investigation and said the operation demonstrated the agency’s continued focus on transnational drug networks.

MONAFRIKA TAKE

The Enugu operation highlights the growing attention being given to organised drug trafficking and cross-border criminal networks.

For now, the allegations against the arrested suspects remain before the court. They have pleaded not guilty, and the case will be determined through the judicial process.
