South Sudan Dissolves Transitional Government Ahead of December Elections

JUBA, South Sudan — September 23, 2026

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has dissolved the country’s Transitional Government of National Unity ahead of elections scheduled for December.

The announcement was made on September 22 following amendments to the country’s election law. South Sudan’s state broadcaster confirmed that the dissolution is intended to pave the way for the December 2026 general elections.

The move also removes the existing vice presidents, ministers and other members of the transitional administration and establishes a caretaker arrangement.

The country has been operating under a transitional political arrangement following the peace agreement that ended years of civil war.

The December election is particularly significant because South Sudan gained independence in 2011 but has repeatedly delayed national elections.

Why it matters

The dissolution marks a major political transition as the country prepares for its first national election since independence.

However, important questions remain about the election timetable, political participation and the country’s readiness for the vote.

Monafrika Watch:
The coming weeks will be important as political parties and other stakeholders respond to the new arrangement and preparations continue for the December election.
