Seven Ethiopian armed groups have announced an alliance aimed at challenging the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
The groups include organisations that have previously been involved in conflicts with the Ethiopian government and, in some cases, have been on opposing sides of earlier conflicts.
According to Reuters, the alliance brings together groups including the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and Fano, alongside four other groups.
The development comes as Ethiopia continues to deal with political and security tensions following years of conflict.
The groups say their alliance is aimed at removing Abiy Ahmed’s government. The government has not accepted the groups’ objectives as legitimate.
MONAFRIKA VIEW
The development is significant because Ethiopia is one of Africa’s most important countries politically and economically. Any expansion of armed conflict could have consequences beyond the affected regions.
A peaceful political process remains important for protecting civilians and maintaining stability.
