The United States has announced a new visa restriction policy targeting certain foreign nationals in South Africa.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the restrictions would apply to people Washington considers responsible for or involved in policies relating to uncompensated land seizures, race-based discrimination, or incitement of imminent violence against minority groups.
The announcement is the latest sign of tension between Washington and Pretoria.
The South African government has rejected claims that white South Africans face persecution and has defended its policies on land reform and racial inequality.
The latest US move does not name specific individuals.
The disagreement comes against the background of wider tensions between the two governments over South Africa’s domestic policies and its international positions.
Monafrika Watch:
The development could further complicate diplomatic relations between two countries that have historically maintained important political and economic ties.
