President Faye seeks support for economic reforms and debt restructuring
Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is in Washington for talks with international financial institutions as his government works to deal with the country’s debt challenges.
Faye is scheduled to meet IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva to discuss Senegal’s economic situation and reform programme.
Senegal has also announced plans to restructure some of its debt through the G20 Common Framework.
World Bank President Ajay Banga said he would discuss Senegal’s case with President Faye and work towards making the restructuring process faster than previous cases involving countries such as Zambia and Ghana.
Senegal recently reached a staff-level agreement with the IMF for a $2.2 billion, three-year programme.
The government is under pressure to restore confidence in the country’s finances while continuing its economic reform plans.
Monafrika’s Take
Senegal’s situation is a reminder that economic growth alone does not protect a country from debt problems.
The challenge for President Faye is to restructure the debt without putting too much pressure on ordinary Senegalese people.
Africa needs financing, but it also needs financial discipline, transparency and stronger domestic production.
