ZAMFARA, NIGERIA — Six Islamic clerics have been abducted in Zamfara State, in another troubling reminder of the security challenges facing parts of northern Nigeria.
The clerics were travelling towards Talata-Mafara when they were taken by armed attackers, according to security authorities. The Nigerian Army and Zamfara State Police Command have both confirmed that the abduction occurred.
Reports say the clerics were heading to a prayer gathering organised by former Zamfara Governor Abdul’aziz Yari.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of people travelling through rural communities in Zamfara, where kidnapping and other forms of insecurity remain a major challenge.
For many residents, the latest incident is another reminder that improved security must go beyond major towns and highways.
Monafrika Take:
The abduction of religious leaders is particularly disturbing. When people cannot travel safely even for religious activities, it shows how much work remains to restore confidence in affected communities.
