The Federal Government has demanded a full investigation into the deaths of two Nigerians in South Africa.
The latest development has added fresh pressure to already strained relations between Abuja and Pretoria.
Nigeria’s government has called for the circumstances surrounding the deaths to be properly investigated and for justice to be served.
The issue comes at a time when Nigerian lawmakers have suspended parliamentary engagements with South Africa because of concerns over attacks on Nigerians.
South Africa has previously assured Nigeria that perpetrators of attacks against Nigerians would be investigated and prosecuted.
The repeated incidents are now becoming more than a diplomatic disagreement. They are raising questions about the safety of thousands of Nigerians who live, work and run businesses in South Africa.
Monafrika’s Take
Nobody should lose their life because of their nationality.
Nigeria must continue to demand justice for its citizens, while South Africa must show that its laws protect everyone living within its borders.
Africa cannot preach unity while Africans living in another African country are treated as outsiders.
