Afrobeats superstar Davido has become the centre of a fresh online debate after responding to a controversial comment by Nigerian rapper Erigga about the role of family wealth in an artiste’s success.
The exchange began after Erigga discussed the advantages that come with coming from a wealthy or well-connected family. Davido took issue with the argument and pushed back publicly.
The disagreement quickly spread across social media, with fans and music followers debating whether financial privilege gives young artistes an unfair advantage or whether talent and hard work remain the biggest factors in sustaining a successful career.
The matter has also revived a long-running conversation in Nigeria’s entertainment industry about privilege, family connections and the different paths artistes take to the top.
Reports on Thursday indicated that the disagreement continued to attract reactions from fans, while Davido also suggested that he may eventually step away from music to focus on business.
