MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali and Turkish forces have freed a Cameroon-flagged cargo vessel that was seized by pirates off Somalia.
The operation lasted about 10 days before the vessel was secured and allowed to resume its journey.
Somali authorities said 14 alleged pirates were killed during the operation and four boats used by the attackers were destroyed.
The vessel, identified as the MV LUTUF, had been hijacked off the coast of Puntland earlier this month.
The operation highlights renewed concerns about piracy in waters around the Horn of Africa.
Somalia has worked with international partners to improve maritime security, but piracy remains a threat to commercial shipping in the region.
