The World Health Organization has officially declared the Ebola outbreak in Uganda over after health authorities confirmed that there were no remaining chains of transmission.
Uganda recorded 20 confirmed cases and two deaths during the outbreak.
The country had earlier announced that it had stopped transmission, after which health authorities and international partners continued monitoring patients and contacts before the official declaration was made.
The development is being welcomed as an important success for Uganda’s health system and its international partners.
However, the success comes as neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo continues to battle a much larger Ebola outbreak.
Health officials are therefore maintaining a strong focus on cross-border surveillance, particularly because people regularly travel between countries in the region.
The experience in Uganda has also demonstrated the importance of early detection, contact tracing, community cooperation and rapid public-health action.
