President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has challenged the Nigeria LNG Limited to do more to ensure Nigerians benefit directly from the country’s huge natural gas resources.
Tinubu made the call during a meeting with the NLNG board, where he stressed the need to reduce gas flaring and increase the economic value Nigeria receives from its gas resources.
The President also urged the company to expand its contribution to the domestic economy while improving the availability of gas for Nigerians.
Nigeria has some of the world’s largest natural gas reserves, yet gas flaring and inadequate infrastructure have continued to limit the sector’s full potential.
The administration has been pushing for greater investment in the gas industry as part of its wider plan to increase government revenue, improve energy supply and attract private investment.
For ordinary Nigerians, however, the major question is whether increased gas production will eventually translate into cheaper and more reliable energy.
NLNG says its operations have generated more than $150 billion since the company’s establishment, making it one of the country’s most important energy companies.
