The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to worsen, with health authorities facing serious challenges in containing transmission.
The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a relatively rare strain for which there is currently no specifically approved vaccine or treatment.
According to the World Health Organization, the outbreak is occurring in a difficult environment affected by insecurity, population movement and limited access to healthcare.
A WHO official said transmission in the DRC remains highly active despite progress in contact tracing and testing.
More than 5,600 cases and 2,700 deaths have been reported in the latest figures cited by WHO officials.
Health authorities are also concerned about funding. The WHO has warned of a significant funding gap that could affect the delivery of medical supplies and protective equipment to communities most affected by the outbreak.
The situation requires continued international support and strong cooperation between health authorities, local communities and neighbouring countries.
