Sudan Crisis Deepens as 27 People, Including Four Children, Are Killed in South Kordofan

The security situation in Sudan’s South Kordofan region has taken another worrying turn after at least 27 people were killed in fresh violence, according to a local medical organisation.

The Sudan Doctors Network said the casualties included four children following attacks in Qardud and Abu Hamama, areas inhabited by members of the Otoro community.

The violence adds another layer to Sudan’s already complicated conflict, which began in April 2023 with fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.

South Kordofan has remained one of the country’s most troubled areas, with disputes over land and ethnic tensions contributing to the violence.

The latest attacks have also forced residents to flee towards nearby communities, including Abu Hitan and Kadugli.

The Sudan Doctors Network has called for greater protection of civilians and warned against attacks based on ethnicity.

The renewed violence comes as Sudan continues to face one of Africa’s worst humanitarian crises, with millions of people displaced and in need of food, healthcare and shelter.
