Zambia Election Crisis Deepens as Opposition Challenges Hichilema’s Victory

Zambia’s post-election political tension has intensified after opposition figures moved to challenge the results of the country’s presidential election.

President Hakainde Hichilema was declared the winner of the August 13 election, securing a second term in office.

But opposition leader Brian Mundubile has rejected the result and said his campaign documented serious irregularities during voting, counting and the transmission of results.

The dispute took a new turn on Monday when Zambia’s top courts were closed on the final day available for filing an election petition.

Authorities cited security concerns for the closure.

The development has generated concern among opposition supporters and observers who fear that the legal process could be affected by the growing political tension.

Mundubile has also been summoned by police over alleged national security concerns, allegations he has rejected.

Zambia has traditionally been viewed as one of Africa’s more stable democracies. The current dispute is therefore being closely watched across the continent.
