Two Ethiopian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations in South Sudan have been killed after their patrol came under attack in Jonglei State.
The incident happened on Monday as the UN patrol was travelling towards Pajut. Several other peacekeepers, South Sudanese police officers and civilian personnel were also injured.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) confirmed the attack and moved additional personnel into the area to secure the location and assist those affected.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack and called for an investigation.
The incident comes at a difficult time for South Sudan, where political tensions and armed clashes have raised fears of a return to a much wider conflict.
The country’s 2018 peace agreement has come under increasing strain, with violence involving government forces and groups linked to opposition leader Riek Machar.
The latest attack has also raised fresh concerns about the safety of humanitarian workers and international peacekeepers operating in the country.
Why it matters: South Sudan remains one of Africa’s most fragile states, and any further deterioration in security could have serious consequences for civilians and humanitarian operations.
