At least 30 people have died after a huge section of a landfill collapsed in Guinea’s capital, Conakry.
The disaster occurred at the Dar-es-Salam landfill after heavy overnight rainfall caused a large mound of waste to give way.
Nearby homes and makeshift structures were buried under the collapsing waste.
Rescue teams have been working at the site while medical workers treat survivors.
Several people were seriously injured in the disaster.
The tragedy has also raised questions about living conditions around the landfill. Authorities had already planned to close the site because of safety concerns, but people were still living and working around the area when the collapse happened.
Government officials have visited the scene and promised assistance to affected families.
The disaster highlights the wider challenges facing rapidly growing African cities, including waste management, housing shortages and the dangers faced by communities living close to poorly managed dumpsites.
