PRETORIA — South Sudan President Salva Kiir has arrived in South Africa for high-level discussions with President Cyril Ramaphosa as concerns over the country’s political future continue to grow.
Kiir’s visit to Pretoria comes at a sensitive time for South Sudan, with discussions around the country’s peace process and preparations for elections high on the political agenda.
The South African government said the visit will provide an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss bilateral relations and regional issues.
South Africa has played an important role in efforts to support peace and political stability in South Sudan. Ramaphosa has also been involved in African Union efforts linked to the country’s peace process.
The latest meeting is therefore being watched closely as South Sudan tries to maintain political stability while implementing its peace arrangements.
For ordinary South Sudanese, the hope remains that political dialogue can prevent a return to widespread conflict and create conditions for a more stable future.
