The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday across Nigeria to mark this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, the Islamic commemoration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government. A statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani, confirmed the declaration.
FG urges Nigerians to promote peace and unity
The minister congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and Nigerians in the diaspora as they prepare to mark the occasion.
He urged citizens to use the celebration as an opportunity to reflect on values such as compassion, humility, service to humanity and peaceful coexistence.
Tunji-Ojo also called on Nigerians to pray for peace and national unity, stressing that building a peaceful country is a shared responsibility.
He encouraged those celebrating to do so with restraint and mutual respect.
What the holiday means for Nigerians
With the declaration, Tuesday, August 25, will be observed as a nationwide public holiday. Workers and members of the public will have the day off to mark the religious occasion.
Eid ul Mawlid is observed by Muslims to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad and is marked through prayers, religious gatherings, reflection and acts of charity.
The Federal Government wished Muslim faithful a peaceful and meaningful Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
