Gunmen Attack Adeleke’s Convoy in Osogbo

Suspected hoodlums opened fire around the convoy of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke shortly after he visited the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo.

The governor had gone to the palace after receiving his Certificate of Return from INEC following his victory in the August 15 governorship election. His convoy reportedly had about 20 vehicles.

The shooting led to an exchange of gunfire between the suspected attackers and security personnel attached to the governor. Reports said the incident lasted about 12 to 15 minutes, but Adeleke and his convoy were eventually able to leave the area safely.

Police give a different account

The Osun State Police Command later said preliminary investigations indicated that Davido, the governor’s nephew, may have been the target of the confrontation, rather than Governor Adeleke himself.

According to the police, a suspected cult member identified as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged,” allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was stopped by members of the singer’s security team. The confrontation reportedly attracted other suspected gang members.

The police also confirmed that a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, was killed during the wider confrontation in the Ita-Olokan area of Osogbo. A full investigation has been launched.
