Senegal has turned to one of its most famous football sons to lead the national team.

Former France international and Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the new head coach of Senegal. The 50-year-old replaces Pape Thiaw, whose time in charge ended after Senegal’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A homecoming for Vieira

Vieira was born in Dakar, Senegal, before moving to France at the age of eight. He went on to build a celebrated playing career, winning the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 with France.

At club level, he became one of Arsenal’s most respected players, making more than 400 appearances and winning three Premier League titles. He also played for Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City.

Now, he returns to the country of his birth with a very different responsibility — rebuilding Senegal’s national team.

A team looking for a fresh start

Vieira takes over at a difficult moment.

Senegal’s 2026 World Cup campaign ended with a 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium in the last 32, leading to the departure of Thiaw. The Football Federation described Vieira’s appointment as a strategic move aimed at building a stronger technical structure around the national team.

His appointment also gives Senegal a coach with experience in European football. Vieira has previously managed New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa.

However, managing Senegal will be his first job as a national-team coach.

AFCON 2027 will be a major test

Vieira’s first major challenge will be preparing the Teranga Lions for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The qualifiers are due to begin in September, giving the new coach little time to settle into the job and make important decisions about his squad and playing style.

Senegal remains one of Africa’s strongest football nations, and expectations will be high.

For Vieira, the task is clear: restore confidence, bring stability to the team and build a side capable of competing for major honours.

The return of a Dakar-born football legend has given Senegalese fans a new reason to look forward to the next chapter.
