OSOGBO — Governor Ademola Adeleke has secured another four years in office after winning the Osun State governorship election.
Adeleke, who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, defeated the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
The election was closely watched across Nigeria because of the political importance of Osun and the wider battle between the PDP and APC in the South-West.
Official results showed Adeleke polling 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji received 444,815 votes.
The victory gives Adeleke another opportunity to continue with his programmes in the state and strengthen his political influence ahead of the 2027 general election.
The governor’s supporters have described the result as a strong endorsement from the people of Osun.
For the opposition, however, the result will lead to questions about what went wrong and how the party can rebuild its position in the state.
The Osun election is also important beyond the state itself. With the 2027 presidential election approaching, political parties will be watching how voters in the South-West respond to the major parties.
Adeleke’s victory therefore carries political meaning beyond Osun. It could shape alliances and strategies as parties prepare for the bigger contest next year.
For now, the governor faces the task of turning his campaign promises into results and convincing voters that they made the right choice.
