Wike Orders Demolition of Buildings Blocking Abuja Waterways

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has begun removing buildings and other structures located on waterways and drainage channels in parts of Abuja.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered the demolition following concerns over flooding and the obstruction of natural water channels.

The exercise has already started in areas including Maitama, where structures identified as blocking waterways are being removed.

The government says buildings constructed on water channels can prevent the free movement of water and increase the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.

The decision is likely to generate debate, particularly among property owners and developers affected by the exercise.

For the FCT Administration, however, the priority is to protect lives and property and prevent a repeat of serious flooding.

The government has warned that structures built in areas designated for waterways will not be allowed to remain where they pose a threat to the city’s drainage system.

The latest action has once again brought attention to the need for proper urban planning and strict enforcement of building regulations in Abuja.
