Ghana Moves to Sixth Place Among World’s Biggest Gold Producers

Accra, Ghana — August 18, 2026

Ghana has moved up to sixth place among the world’s largest gold-producing countries, overtaking the United States.

The latest figures show that Ghana produced about 185 tonnes of gold in 2025, equivalent to 5.94 million ounces.

The figure represents an increase of more than 23 per cent compared with the country’s 2024 production.

The Ghana Chamber of Mines said the increase was driven largely by strong growth in small-scale mining. Production from the sector rose sharply and accounted for more than half of Ghana’s total gold output.

Ghana now sits behind China, Russia, Australia, Canada and Peru in the global ranking.

The development strengthens Ghana’s position as one of Africa’s leading gold producers and could further increase the importance of the mining sector to the country’s economy.
