Governor Ademola Adeleke has been re-elected as the Governor of Osun State after defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the governorship election held on Saturday, August 15.
The result, announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) early Sunday, gives Adeleke another four years to lead the South-West state.
Adeleke, who contested under the Accord Party, received 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji polled 444,815 votes. Adeleke therefore won by a margin of 66,252 votes.
A Close Contest
The election was a major political battle involving 15 political parties. The contest attracted strong attention across Osun’s 30 Local Government Areas, with Adeleke seeking to retain his position after first winning the governorship in 2022.
The governor’s victory was not simply a win for his new political platform. It also marked a significant shift in Osun politics. Adeleke originally became governor under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022 but contested the 2026 election on the platform of Accord.
According to reported results, Adeleke won 19 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured 11.
Over One Million Votes Cast
The election attracted more than one million votes across the state. INEC figures reported 1,005,800 votes cast, with 20,721 ballots rejected.
Osun had 2,339,233 registered voters, while about 81.5 percent had collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and were eligible to vote.
A New Chapter for Adeleke
The victory gives Adeleke a fresh four-year mandate and the opportunity to continue his administration’s programmes.
His campaign focused on areas including infrastructure, education and grassroots development. His supporters presented the election as a vote for continuity and confidence in his administration.
For the Accord Party, the victory is particularly important. Adeleke’s win represents the party’s first governorship victory in Osun State and gives it a stronger position in the state’s political landscape.
The Road Ahead
Following the declaration, attention will now turn from political campaigns to governance.
The election also comes with expectations from Osun residents, who will look to the governor to improve infrastructure, create opportunities for young people, strengthen education and health services, and improve the overall welfare of citizens.
The PDP has already congratulated Adeleke on his victory and urged him to focus on peace, development and the welfare of the people during his second term.
