Uche Nnaji: Court Releases Ex-Minister’s Passport for Medical Trip

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the release of the international passport of former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, to allow him to travel abroad for medical treatment.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik granted the request after Nnaji’s lawyer, Chief Ogwu Onoja, SAN, asked the court to release the travel document. The case has been adjourned until October 26, 2026, for continuation of trial.

What is the case about?

Nnaji is facing a six-count charge filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The charges include allegations of certificate forgery, making and using false documents, false information, and corruption. The ICPC alleges that Nnaji presented a purported NYSC certificate and a University of Nigeria, Nsukka degree certificate during the process of his appointment as minister.

The ICPC has also alleged that Nnaji received about ₦29.58 million in salary and allowances between August 2023 and October 2025, which the commission says constituted proceeds of unlawful acts.

Nnaji’s position

Nnaji pleaded not guilty to all six charges when he was arraigned on July 13, 2026. The allegations therefore remain matters before the court and have not been established as facts by a final judgment.

His passport had previously been deposited with the court as part of his bail conditions. The court has now permitted its release for the proposed medical trip.

MONAFRIKA’S TAKE

The latest development does not end the case. It simply allows the former minister to travel for medical treatment while the legal proceedings continue.

The next major date to watch is October 26, 2026, when the trial is expected to continue.
