37 Detainees Die in NSCDC Custody as Nigeria Launches Investigation

The deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have triggered a major investigation and renewed calls for accountability.

The detainees died at an NSCDC facility in Niger State after being arrested during an operation against illegal mining.

The Federal Government has established an independent committee to investigate the deaths. NSCDC personnel have also been detained in connection with the incident.

The case has generated public concern, with families of some of the deceased demanding answers about what happened to their relatives while in government custody.

The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and determine whether anyone should face disciplinary or legal action.

MONAFRIKA VIEW

A person in government custody remains entitled to basic protection and due process. The investigation should be transparent, and the families of the deceased deserve clear answers.
