Nigeria Destroys Illicit Drugs Worth ₦301 Billion

LAGOS — August 18, 2026

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has destroyed almost 330 tonnes of seized illicit drugs following a court order.

The drugs, weighing about 329,865 kilograms, were valued at an estimated ₦301.06 billion.

The destruction took place in Lagos and involved substances seized during enforcement operations.

Authorities say the action forms part of efforts to remove dangerous drugs from circulation and prevent them from reaching communities.

The huge quantity involved highlights the scale of the illegal drug trade facing Nigeria.

Drug abuse remains a major concern, particularly because of its impact on young people, families and communities.

The latest destruction also shows the financial value attached to the illegal drug market.

Authorities are expected to continue investigations and enforcement operations against those involved in the production, transportation and distribution of illicit drugs.

The government has repeatedly called for stronger cooperation from communities in identifying and reporting activities linked to illegal drugs.
