New funding targets municipal infrastructure across the country
South Africa has secured a $1 billion loan from the New Development Bank to support infrastructure improvements in municipalities.
The loan has a 16-year maturity period, including a three-year grace period. The money is expected to support important urban infrastructure projects.
Infrastructure remains a major issue in South Africa, with municipalities facing challenges involving water, sanitation, transport and other public services.
The financing comes as South Africa tries to improve infrastructure while also attracting more investment and creating jobs.
The New Development Bank was established by the BRICS countries and focuses on financing infrastructure and sustainable development projects.
South Africa is one of the bank’s founding members.
Monafrika’s Take
Borrowing money for infrastructure can be useful if the money is properly managed.
South Africa now has to make sure the funding produces better roads, water systems, public services and jobs, rather than becoming another financial burden.
The success of a loan should be measured by what people can see and use after the money is spent.
