Nigeria’s stock market is becoming increasingly concentrated, with 24 major companies accounting for about 74.8 per cent of the total market capitalisation.
The combined value of the 24 companies was reported at about ₦117.01 trillion in August.
The development shows the enormous influence of Nigeria’s biggest listed companies on the overall performance of the Nigerian Exchange.
When major companies experience strong growth, they can significantly lift the wider market. The opposite can also happen when their share prices fall.
The concentration also highlights the importance of large companies to Nigeria’s capital market and the country’s investment landscape.
For investors, the figures serve as a reminder that movements in a relatively small number of major companies can have a significant effect on the overall market.
Nigeria’s stock market has continued to attract investors as businesses seek new capital and investors look for opportunities across different sectors of the economy.
The growing market value of leading companies could also strengthen Nigeria’s position as one of Africa’s major investment destinations.
