NIAMEY, NIGER — Niger’s military government has appointed Brigadier General Mamane Sani Kiaou as the new Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces following a serious military mutiny last month.
Kiaou replaces Major General Moussa Salaou Barmou.
The leadership change follows a nearly 24-hour mutiny at a military base near Niamey’s international airport on August 28–29.
The mutiny reportedly involved young soldiers who took hostages and attacked sensitive locations. The rebellion was eventually put down with assistance from Russia’s Africa Corps.
The crisis has exposed deeper concerns within Niger’s military, particularly over security conditions and the pressure facing troops fighting armed groups.
Niger has been under military rule since the 2023 coup that removed President Mohamed Bazoum. Since then, the country has moved away from its former Western security partnerships and developed closer relations with Russia.
Monafrika Take:
The change in military leadership may help the junta regain control, but replacing commanders will not by itself solve Niger’s security problems. The bigger question is whether the government can improve conditions for soldiers while protecting civilians from armed groups.
