South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is in New Delhi for the 18th BRICS Summit, where leaders are discussing trade, investment, technology, energy and global security.
The summit brings together the expanded BRICS membership, including South Africa, Egypt and Ethiopia.
The meeting comes at a time of growing tension over global conflicts, international trade and the balance of power between major economies.
South Africa’s presence gives the continent a seat at one of the world’s increasingly influential political and economic platforms. Ramaphosa is also scheduled to participate in an India-South Africa business leadership meeting.
BRICS members have reportedly reached agreement on a joint declaration that is expected to condemn unilateral warfare without naming a particular country.
Monafrika’s Take
For Africa, BRICS is not simply about politics.
It is about trade, investment, infrastructure, technology and access to new markets.
South Africa, Egypt and Ethiopia now have an opportunity to push African interests on a much bigger international platform.
But membership alone will not transform African economies. African countries must negotiate strongly and make sure ordinary citizens and local businesses benefit from the opportunities.
