Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo are dealing with a worrying development after Ebola spread to Sud-Ubangi Province, the seventh province affected by the current outbreak.
The new case involves the Bundibugyo virus strain and is particularly concerning because Sud-Ubangi is in western Congo, close to the borders with the Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic.
The patient reportedly travelled through several provinces and neighbouring countries before becoming ill.
The outbreak has already placed enormous pressure on the country’s health system. As of September 11, reports put the number of cases at more than 7,000, with thousands of deaths recorded.
Health workers are being vaccinated, while authorities have also begun work on vaccines specifically targeting the Bundibugyo strain.
The World Health Organization has warned that the outbreak could become one of the most serious Ebola emergencies the continent has faced.
Monafrika’s Take
This is not a story for panic. It is a story for preparedness.
African countries sharing borders with the DRC need strong disease surveillance, quick reporting and cooperation between health authorities.
The lesson from previous outbreaks is simple: early action saves lives.
