Bukavu School Fire: At Least 26 Students Dead as Tragedy Shakes Eastern Congo

A devastating fire in Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has killed at least 26 students, according to South Kivu authorities.

The fire swept through two schools in the city on Thursday, killing 19 girls and seven boys, while dozens of other people were injured.

The fire reportedly started at a nearby house before spreading rapidly to the schools.

The tragedy occurred in a densely populated area where many buildings are made from wood and other materials that can burn quickly.

Emergency workers and health facilities were overwhelmed as injured students were brought in for treatment.

Investigators are still determining the exact cause of the fire.

The tragedy is particularly painful because it happened in a region already suffering from years of conflict and insecurity.

Bukavu has been under the control of the M23 rebel movement since 2025, adding another layer of difficulty to emergency response and public safety.

Monafrika’s Take

Children should feel safest when they are in school.

The Bukavu tragedy is therefore not just another news story. It is a painful reminder of the importance of safe schools, proper emergency exits, fire prevention and quick emergency response.

Africa cannot talk about the future of its children while failing to protect them in places where they spend much of their day.
