Nigeria’s 2027 Battle Has Begun: Tinubu Faces an Opposition Searching for Unity

Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election is already becoming one of the country’s biggest political stories.

President Bola Tinubu is seeking another term under the APC, while opposition politicians are trying to build a coalition capable of challenging the ruling party.

The major problem for the opposition is simple:

Can they agree on one candidate?

Several opposition figures and parties have pushed the idea of presenting a single candidate against Tinubu. A September 1 statement from a PDP faction again backed the idea of one opposition candidate.

But disagreements remain.

The opposition camp has struggled with competing presidential ambitions, party structures and disagreements over who should lead a possible coalition. Recent analysis has described these internal divisions as one of the biggest obstacles to creating a strong challenge to the APC.

Meanwhile, Tinubu’s camp is projecting confidence.

An aide to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike recently said Wike would support Tinubu and predicted a stronger victory for the president in 2027 than in 2023.

At the same time, campaign activity has already begun, with issues such as the economy, insecurity, fuel policy and the record of the APC government becoming major campaign talking points.

The big question

The 2027 election may not simply be about Tinubu versus the opposition.

It could come down to whether the opposition can overcome its own divisions.

If several strong candidates remain on different platforms, opposition votes could split. If they successfully unite behind one candidate, the political equation could become much tighter.

MONAFRIKA TAKE

Nigerians should look beyond the noise.

2027 should not only be about who can shout the loudest, who has the biggest crowd, or who controls the strongest political structure.

The real question should be: Who has the clearest plan to make Nigeria safer, more productive, and easier to live in?

The election is approaching. Nigerians should demand ideas, records and clear plans — not just promises.
