Nigeria’s Foreign Reserves Climb Above $53 Billion as Naira Strengthens

Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves have climbed above $53 billion, strengthening the country’s external position and providing additional support for the naira.

Recent market data put Nigeria’s reserves at around $53.9 billion, while the naira has also recorded a strong performance in the official foreign exchange market.

The improvement comes amid stronger foreign exchange inflows, including diaspora remittances and oil-related earnings. Higher reserves give the Central Bank of Nigeria greater capacity to manage pressure in the currency market.

The naira’s recent performance is particularly notable because election periods in Nigeria have traditionally brought increased demand for foreign currency.

Analysts, however, say maintaining the gains will depend on continued improvements in foreign exchange supply, oil production, investor confidence and economic reforms.

For Nigerians and businesses, a more stable naira could help reduce some of the uncertainty that has affected the cost of imports and other dollar-linked transactions.
