Nigeria’s Economy Grows 4.43% as Tinubu Says Recovery Is Taking Shape

ABUJA — Nigeria’s economy recorded stronger growth in the second quarter of 2026, with real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanding by 4.43 per cent, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

The latest growth is higher than the 3.89 per cent recorded in the first quarter and also above the 4.23 per cent recorded in the same quarter of 2025.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu welcomed the figures, saying they show that the country’s economic reforms are beginning to deliver results.

The services sector remained the biggest contributor to the economy, while agriculture and the oil sector also recorded growth. Average crude oil production rose to about 1.72 million barrels per day, compared with 1.55 million barrels per day in the first quarter.

However, the figures also reveal areas of concern. Manufacturing’s contribution fell, while Nigerians continue to face pressure from high living costs.

The latest figures therefore present a mixed picture: the economy is expanding, but the major challenge remains turning economic growth into better living conditions for ordinary households.

Monafrika Focus:
The next test for the Federal Government will be whether the reported growth can translate into more jobs, lower prices and improved purchasing power.
