Nigeria’s 2027 Election Race Heats Up as Opposition Parties Seek Common Front Against Tinubu

ABUJA — Nigeria’s political temperature is rising as opposition parties and political leaders intensify efforts to build a stronger challenge to President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Opposition politicians are meeting in Abuja on Monday for a summit focused on cooperation and the possibility of creating a common political platform. The meeting brings renewed attention to the long-running discussion about whether major opposition figures can work together rather than contesting the election separately.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi and other opposition figures have been linked to different efforts to create a stronger political alliance.

However, the biggest challenge remains leadership. Questions over who would lead a possible coalition and which political platform should carry the alliance have continued to create disagreements.

For the ruling APC, the growing opposition discussions represent another major political development as President Tinubu prepares to seek another term.
